Performance Appraisal

Principles of Performance AppraisalPerformance appraisals should and could be one of the most powerful ways of motivating your team and keeping them on track for outstanding performance. For those managers and employees that both enjoy them and find them really beneficial, the appraisal becomes an integral part of business, team and individual development.

However, it would be fair to say that the majority of managers and employees do not enjoy them.

From a manager's point of view, the big issue is that they are always time consuming. Team members can sometimes have unrealistic expectations and it can also be uncomfortable addressing those difficult performance issues.

From an employee's point of view, sometimes it is difficult to express what is really felt. There can be apprehension, disappointment that an expectation has not been met or surprise when an old issue is resurrected. Rarely are they motivational!

There will inevitably be differences of opinion on both sides. Once the appraisal is finished, the majority of people seem to breathe a sigh of relief and carry on as before! Overall, the perception is that the experience has been of little real value. The key is learning to do them properly and that is what this day of coaching is all about - learning what to do before, during and after an appraisal.
